During the filming of “City Slickers”, Billy Crystal and character actor Bruno Kirby had a falling out.
Not only would Crystal no longer work with Kirby, but neither would any of the many producers and directors associated with Crystal.
As a result, while Kirby continued to work, he was cast in fewer movies. The ones he was cast in were forgettable and obscure.
Kirby was one of the hottest character actors in the late 1980s/90s “When Harry Met Sally”, “City Slickers”, “The Godfather II”, “Donny Brasco”.
His career was on a trajectory that was leading inexorably to an Oscar nomination or the golden statuette itself.
In a 2001 interview for Billy’s “America’s Sweetheart” movie,
——-“I think we are still friends. Something personal or whatever it is happened. I don’t know, eight, nine years ago. Whatever?”—
Kirby and Crystal went from practically partners to not seeing or speaking to each other “in a long time”.
