What happened to Rear Admiral Matome Ugaki’s flight after it had taken off on August 15, 1945?

Everybody thinks that the big war ended when the Japanese Emperor made a speech over the radio. However, there was one more sad thing to happen to a man named Admiral Ugaki. Ugaki was a boss who sent many young boys to their deaths in airplanes. When he heard that his country had lost the war, he felt really bad. He felt so ashamed of himself that he did not want to stay alive. He decided to fly one more airplane and never return.

He took off all of his shiny medals and took a small sword. He boarded an old war airplane. He only wanted a few of his friends to go with him, but eleven other pilots decided to go too. While the sun was setting, they headed towards the American ships. He sent one last message over the radio to say he was going to die for his country.

However, things did not go as Ugaki had planned. While he was near a small island, the American sailors were just sitting around. They were drinking beer and were really happy because they thought the war had already ended. Ugaki’s airplane did not even hit the American ship. It just landed in the sand.

The next day, the Americans saw the old airplane. Inside, there were three dead men. One of them had a green suit and a sword. It was the Admiral. The Americans did not think he was a hero. To them, he was just a man who wanted to fight in a war that had already ended. They did not have a big funeral for the Admiral. They just tied a rope to his feet and pulled him out with a jeep. They then buried him in the dirt. It is a sad and lonely death for a famous leader.
