My husband caught me texting another man romantically. The other man and I never met, but my husband still wants a divorce. Isn’t he taking things too far?

Wow, you may well be the (ex-)wife of one of my best friends (and maybe you really are). He thought everything was going just fine, but then one day he was looking for some bread in the kitchen (bear with me).

In one of the kitchen’s cupboards, instead of a loaf of bread, John found a cell phone he had never seen before. And as it was unlocked, he had a quick peek inside. And that changed his married life (and most of the rest of it) in the blink of an eye, because it contained messages — romantic messages between his wife and an unknown man she must have known (in some guise) for a while.

When confronted with the secret phone, John’s wife claimed she had never met the man in person —

“This was just a virtual fling, you know.”

But Petra was lying, of course.

And in any case, John filed for divorce because whatever she was denying, it was undeniable that she had been romantically involved with the invisible man.

In the end (after many sleepless hours of painful discussion), she finally admitted that she had been sleeping with the unknown man all along, crushing his heart even further. But she still did not understand why John wanted a divorce.

Because besides being a liar, Petra was also, errr — stupid.
