If you looked at her in 2004 you could easily picture her having an Oscar by now. Is she difficult to work with? She has proven herself as a tremendous actress in roles like Melancholia or Fargo.

Question: Why did Kirsten Dunst’s career never really take off? If you looked at her in 2004 you could easily picture her having an Oscar by now. Is she difficult to work with? She has proven herself as a tremendous actress in roles like Melancholia or Fargo.

Some reasons:

  1. She’s had some issues with mental health – She took time off to deal with them, but unfortunately Hollywood does not wait for anyone and it doesn’t seem to have waited for her.
  2. She seems to have been the recipient of terrible advice – She applied for and received German citizenship and a passport with the apparent desire to work more frequently in the European Union. However, since European actors are jumping through hoops to work in Hollywood, a place where she’d already found work that seems to have been time and money wasted. Additionally, her post-Spider-Man roles weren’t very good which seems to have been either her or her team not reviewing the scripts that she was receiving very carefully.
  3. She hasn’t done any significant stage work – Had she done work in the theater, then that could have sharpened her skills and she could have found more serious roles for herself. She didn’t and so she hasn’t.
  4. She’s not conventionally attractive – While she was “cute” when she was younger as she aged, her appearance settled into her simply being slightly better than average. There are a number of more attractive female actors out there and so Dunst was going to have to get by on more than her looks at a certain point.
  5. She hasn’t been breaking records at the box office – Dunst’s highest-grossing films were the Spider-Man trilogy and that was more than a decade ago. Hollywood is a business and if you don’t make money, you either take lower-profile roles or you leave the business. While Dunst has remained a viable performer, it’s unlikely that she’ll ever be an A-lister simply because her financial track record has been so poor.

Kirsten Dunst gets work; however she no longer receives starring roles in major films. The combination of the above five and other reasons seem to be the cause of that.
