In the US, despite some people believing that “prisoners have more rights than you,” the list of things they can do is a lot shorter than the list of things they can’t. But, I’ll give you some examples of things they can not do.
- Choose when and what to eat
- Smoke
- “Oh, my knee hurts. I’ll just pop a few Tylenol”
- Express anger
- Sleep deeply
- Daydream, get lost in thought or otherwise pay less than full attention to their surroundings
- Choose what to watch
- Choose when to go to bed
- “I’m really tired, I’ll mop the floor tomorrow”
- Decide to quit a job
- Be believed or trusted by people they need to believe them
- Have privacy in their belongings
- have privacy in their communications
- have a place to be alone when they’re tired of people
- feel safe
Prison is not a fun place to be. Excluding wrongful convictions, everyone is there for a reason but not everyone deserves to be there. Watch what you do, never think you don’t need a lawyer. Resolve all doubt in your favor.
EDIT So, I feel like I should do like everyone else does and make an edit about how this made it to 1k upvotes. Sarcasm aside, this is my first answer to get that many votes. Thanks for reading everyone!
