What is wrong with Eric Roberts?

Mateo Elijah

Nothing, at least these days. In fact, he has a stellar reputation in Hollywood as a guy who always shows up to the set on time, has no ego to speak of, is funny and pleasant to be around, and truly happy to be working, whether it’s on a Z movie or a blockbuster. He is also said to be kind to his fans, and as an actor, is reputed to be idolized by many A-list stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio.

Eric Roberts at 65 is not the same guy he was at 35. Way back when, he had a serious cocaine addiction, which he kicked in 1995, and he also had a horrific car accident in his 20s which left him in a coma for three days and caused fairly severe neurological damage that took quite a bit of therapy to overcome (and from which he still has issues with his short term memory today).

He was the poster child for the “Hollywood bad boy” in the 80s and early 90s: altercations with police and paparazzi, a nasty custody battle, estrangement from his sisters Julia and Lisa over his drug use, and the incident that led him to ultimately get clean — an arrest for shoving his wife, Eliza, into the wall. All of this is partly why he never became the megastar his sister Julia did (I find him a better actor than her, frankly).

But that’s not who he is anymore. He and Eliza are still married (and he speaks of her with sheer adoration in interviews), and he is now a grandfather, his daughter Emma having had her first child in 2020. He has long since reconciled with his sisters. Other than marijuana, he hasn’t used drugs or alcohol in decades. He’s a vegan and an animal rights activist who takes in special needs animals.

In other words, he is a kinder, gentler Eric Roberts than the world has ever known, and by all appearances, also a happier one.

So, nothing is wrong with him. He’s doing great.

Oh, and he’s still as sexy as he ever was.
