Sharon Stone said during production on one of her earliest films, King Solomon’s Mines (1985), when she turned up to the film shoot in Africa she was alarmed to find out that no stunt double had been hired for her and she ended up having to do most of it by herself. She wasn’t too pleased by how she was treated on the shoot. However five years later, on Total Recall (1990) she had trained extensively for the physical ardours of the shoot and this time she was happy to show her athleticism for the film, such as the scene where she attacks Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Doug Quaid (below).
Goldie Hawn, despite being in her mid forties at the time, also did some of her own stunts for 1990 film Bird on a Wire.
She trained carefully with the stunt team and they were impressed at what she could do, so much so that she was made an honorary member of the guild of stuntmen and women.
Finally I should mention Dolph Lundgren. Although he now has a regular (and much younger) stunt double, Tony Messenger (below with Dolph), that wasn’t always the case.
During filming of his breakthrough role in Masters of the Universe (1987), the producers were unable to source a stunt double for someone of his physique. He had to do most of the stunts involving his character by himself.
