What was the actor Robert Shaw like to work with?

When I read the biography by John French, I discovered that Robert Shaw and Nick Nolte got on quite well during the making of The Deep (1977). They sometimes had a drink together, along with Jacqueline Bisset.

On the Robert Shaw recent documentary, Sarah Miles found him to be a stimulating actor to work with on the set of The Hireling (1973). She was slightly surprised at the energy Shaw displayed, including during their after-work games of table tennis – which Miles usually won!

The above photo is from the film Avalanche Express (1979). When Maximillian Schell directed Robert Shaw in the European thriller End of the Game (1975), the actor found Schell to be and I quote from the John French biography: “a martinet.” Unquote. Shaw was unhappy with Schell being cast in the leading role in the film adaptation of Shaw’s play, The Man in the Glass Booth (1976). For that reason and others, Robert Shaw refused to have his name included on the film’s credits.
