3 years ago my wife and I went to an Argentinian Steak house in Duquesa on the south of Spain. We both got fillet steaks, vegetables and sides. And a bottle of wine. The total was about €60.
The table next to us had a mother and daughter who seemed to order everything on the menu. We got the bill and I paid it (no need for a tip – it’s Spain). When we got back to the apartment, my wife looked at the bill and saw that we were overcharged. We must have got the bill for the table beside us. AHH.
A few days later, in the afternoon, we passed the restaurant. They were setting up for the night. I decided to go in. We got in the door and Saul, the owner, came over to greet us. Without a word, he brought us into the back of the restaurant and gave me an envelope. He saw that we were overcharged a few nights ago and put the extra money in an envelope in the hope that he would see us again.
We were so impressed that we booked a table for another night.
From that point onwards, we go to that restaurant a few times a year when we’re in Duquesa. We have become friends with Saul. Honesty has well and truly paid off for Saul.
