Saving a House, Preserving a Home

Mateo Elijah

After my stepfather passed away, my mother asked me to take responsibility for selling his house. It was a beautiful home, though it needed some repairs. The house was located just one block from the beach in the San Diego area, which made it extremely valuable.

Because of its location, I knew that developers would be very interested in buying it, most likely to tear it down and build several new homes in its place. The idea of that lovely house being destroyed really bothered me. When a developer made an offer of just under three million dollars, I refused it, even though our real estate agent told us it was probably the best offer we would receive.

About a week later, we received another offer—this time from a family—who offered $150,000 more and wanted to keep the house as their home rather than redevelop the land. I was very happy to accept their offer.

The family went on to spend another one million dollars renovating and restoring the house. Today, it is one of the nicest homes in the entire town. I feel incredibly grateful that the house still stands, and it brings me real happiness to know that it continues to be a family home rather than something that was torn down and replaced.
