Emerson Hoogendoorn was a sweet and lively girl, full of spirit. She loved playing sports, making bracelets, and most of all, spending time with her friends and family.
In June 2018, Emerson was diagnosed with Diffuse Midline Glioma after having headaches, double vision, and extreme tiredness. That summer, she went through two major brain surgeries and started the usual 30 radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Later, she joined a clinical trial of ONC 201 at Mott Children’s Hospital.
Shortly before she passed away, we had the chance to talk with Emerson about her fight with brain cancer. When asked, “How do you stay so positive?” she said, “I surround myself with positive people. My family, friends, and teachers really help me stay positive.” Her words continue to inspire us every day.
Today, we remember “Emerson the Brave” on what would have been her 14th birthday.
