The world burned. She swam.
In November 2018, the Camp Fire swallowed the town of Paradise, California. It moved faster than cars could drive. A horse named Sib was trapped in the chaos. The fences were burning. The air was poison. She had seconds to make a choice.
She didn’t run into the woods she ran toward the only thing that wasn’t burning: a backyard swimming pool. She jumped in. The pool cover tangled around her legs, keeping her afloat but trapping her in place. For hours, the fire roared over the water. The house burned to the ground. The trees turned to ash.
But Sib stayed submerged, protected by the cool water. Days later, Jeff Hill was walking through the apocalyptic ruins when he saw something moving in the filthy water. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Sib was shivering, exhausted, and “looked defeated,” but she was alive.
Jeff gently unhooked the pool cover and guided her to the steps. When she finally climbed out of the ash-filled water, she didn’t run. She walked right up to him and pressed her head into his chest. She had survived the end of the world in the deep end.
