On January 26, 1966, the three Beaumont children—Jane, 9, Arnna, 7, and Grant, 4—were thrilled to be allowed to go to Glenelg Beach in South Australia.
It was already very hot and sunny when they boarded a bus at 8:45 in the morning. The children were likely excited about swimming in the waves and using the coins their mother had given them to buy lunch at a nearby cake shop.
At that time in Australia, it was not unusual for children to travel around the community and spend time at the beach without an adult.
The children arrived at the beach and were seen by a mailman who knew them. He noticed they were with a tall, thin man with light brown hair.
They were also spotted at the cake shop with the same man, paying for food with paper money, even though they had only left home with coins.
After that, they vanished.
When the children did not return home on the noon bus, their parents grew worried and started searching for them. When they couldn’t find them, they contacted the police.
Despite large searches and many years of investigation, the Beaumont children have never been found. Police believe they were taken and killed.
Several men in the area, known for crimes against children, were looked into as suspects. But no evidence ever linked them to the disappearance.
The tall, thin man with the light brown hair was never identified.
