Something changed in Mav’s eyes

Mateo Elijah

Something changed in Mav’s eyes—something his parents will never forget.
One moment, their 6-year-old little boy was trying to stand on his own for the first time in weeks.
The next, his head and eyes turned to one side, his body went still, and alarms filled the room as doctors rushed in.
For two long hours, his parents stood by him, whispering his name, praying he was still fighting. Then—he blinked. His eyes moved. Their brave boy came back.

Mavryck has cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare and cruel brain disease that slowly takes away movement, speech, and sight.

He became the first child at one hospital to receive a bone marrow transplant for cALD — with his big sister, 8-year-old VeraLee, as his donor.

Now, 33 days after the procedure, Mav keeps beating the odds. Every small move, every breath, every heartbeat is a reminder of his strength and will to fight.
