Why did the female war photographer, Lee Miller, take a bath in Hitler’s own tub on the day he died?

This photo is very famous. It shows a woman sitting in the bathtub of Adolf Hitler right before the war ended. It was this very big grown up moment like saying “We won”.

The woman is Lee Miller. Before the war she was a very beautiful model even on the cover of Vogue magazine. But when the war began, she no longer modeled but became a courageous photographer to reveal people to the truth.

The picture was taken in Hitler’s apartment in Munich on a very important day: April 30, 1945. That was exactly the day that Hitler killed himself far away in Berlin. Lee Miller and her friend found the apartment and made a big statement out of it.

Look close, and you see her boots are very dirty on the bathmat. That dirt was the dirt of the battlefields and of places such as the Dachau concentration camp that she had just photographed. She carried all the horror to Hitler’s clean, private room. You can even see the picture of the dictator watching her from the side of the tub.

Miller didn’t just pose. She really washed off the dirt of the war in his tub and then she slept in his bed. It was her way of showing that good people and freedom had finally conquered the great evil that inhabited that house. It was what to say “Take that!” to the bad man who was gone.
