Actor?
I would say that Kim Basinger was offered an instant A list celebrity status when she was cast as Vicki Vale in Batman (1989).
Even before that, she was one of the biggest Hollywood Sex Symbols and sought after by every production company in the 1980’s.
There was one problem with the “Marilyn Monroe of the 80’s”, she was notorious for being one of the biggest divas on set.
After the success of Batman, she tried to make her own Film Studio which flopped and cost her $20 Million. Then she appeared in garbage movies like The Marrying Man and Cool World.
But the worst offense was her outright horrible behavior on set. She would constantly fight with producers, directors, and other actors who “threatened to ruin her vision and motivations.” During filming for The Marrying Man, she demanded that the Director of Photography be fired immediately because she didn’t understand his vision for scenes. She also stalled production as she insisted her makeup be removed and reapplied before each take. Cool World’s failure was thanks to her demanding that the movie be edited for children (Ralph Bakshi—the creator—was opposed to this because he wanted the movie to be for mature audiences).
Then in 1993, Kim’s career took a nosedive straight to hell when she backed out of the movie, Boxing Helena, at the last second. The producers were furious and sued her for breach of contract. (Her not informing the studio of her withdrawal, not being helpful to find a replacement, and lying about her behavior at the witness stand also did damage to her reputation)
As a result of her having to pay $3.8 Million in a settlement, Basinger filed for Bankruptcy. The damage to her financial situation, as well as her horrible diva personality, cost her a successful film career. While she did make a comeback with L.A. Confidential, and win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, her roles in I Dreamed of Africa and Bless the Child killed her momentum thanks to terrible reviews.
Now, Basinger is known for her failed marriage to Alec Baldwin (ugh), egotism, financial problems, and diva behavior on set.
