Just the other day, we took our 7 month wolfalike dog on a walk in the country park. It has been raining a lot, so it was very muddy. On one path….the mud was very boggy and about 12″ deep in places.
There were a couple of walkers, women in early 20’s. One was dressed for rambling, the other….not quite so….and was seemingly stranded on a relatively solid island of mud.
Our dog went and greeted her, and she petted him back, commenting on how stunning he was, and struck up a bit of a conversation with my husband. After a minute or 2, they were joking about the mud, and how she was going to get stuck in the mud whichever direction she went in. Now, my husband is a big man, and offered the woman a piggy-back to the side of the golf course (the only un-muddy area), and she laughed a little and declined, at which point my husband started to walk away. He called the dog (who has excellent recall by the way) but he wouldn’t come. My husband half-heartedly joked that the dog wouldn’t leave without her, and asked her if she was sure she didn’t want a piggy-back to safety. Again she declined. So he turned to walk away again….and the dog stayed put!
So he went back to the woman and said bluntly, “Look. There’s no way he’s going to leave you unless he knows you’re safe, so are you going to let me give you a piggy back or not?”
Sheepishly, she agreed, and my wonderful husband gave this (rather embarrassed) perfect stranger a piggy back to the grass! Her friend was laughing her head off!
And then our dog finally carried on the rest of his walk!
What a star!!! I do hope Lady Karma remembers his act of kindness (maybe a winning lottery ticket some time soon??? Haha)!!
