A 17-year-old boy was attacked by a police sub-inspector after he accidentally rode his bicycle into a street where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy was practicing for his visit on Friday.

A video that went viral shows the boy cycling as the Prime Minister’s cars pass by. Then, the officer, B S Gadhvi, confronts the teenager, pulling his hair and hitting him.

A family member of the boy said, “We thought he was just out for a walk, but when he didn’t come back for hours, we started to worry. He returned home at 9:30 PM, crying and saying the police had beaten him up for no reason. He mentioned he was taken to the police station. The officers should have talked to him instead of hurting him.”

The video sparked anger among local people and on social media.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Amita Vanani stated that Mr. Gadhvi’s actions were “completely unacceptable and regrettable.” She also mentioned that Mr. Gadhvi, who worked at a police station in Morbi district, has been moved to the control room right away. He was in Surat to assist with security for PM Modi’s visit. Additionally, reports say that his salary raise has been put on hold for a year.

Police should avoid such action in public.
