Yes, this does happen sometimes. This act is called the predator-prey reversal.
Prey are also equipped with weapons. For example, buffaloes have horns and deer have antlers. Now, the predator has to choose what to do next: do or die.
We all are familiar with the situation of death. But if the prey chooses to attack, then there can be some cases.
- The prey (group) will kill the predator.
- The predator will run away due to the fear of death.
- The prey will lose and it will be killed.
- The prey will win but terribly injured(close to death).
- Both the prey and the predator will die fighting.
Cape buffaloes really care for each other and are very protective when it comes to their family. Also, they are intelligent. So, most of the time, the herd decides to attack. And they usually win. Many times, the predator (mostly lion) is brutally killed.
