In 2014 a German man named Lars Mittank went on holiday to a seaside resort in Bulgaria.

On the last day of his trip, he got into a fight with four men in a football game that left him with a perforated eardrum.

A doctor gave him antibiotics and advised him not to fly home with his friends the next day because the change in air pressure during the flight could worsen the damage to his ears. Side effects of this drug include vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and kidney problems. (There are more but not as severe)

His friends flying home reportedly said Lars was easygoing and chatty. He then decided to stay another day at a cheap motel.

That night his mother got a distressing phone call from him in which he whispered that four men had come to kill him and that she should cancel all her bank cards…. He also sent her a text message asking her about the antibiotics the doctor had given her.

Footage found later from that night at the hotel showed him pacing the halls of the hotel and hiding in an elevator. At 1 a.m. he left the hotel and returned with no one knowing where he went during this time.

Earlier the next day he headed to the airport for his flight home. But before he could get through security, CCTV showed him doing something completely inexplicable.

After speaking to an airport doctor (he had everything he needed to fly) he saw construction workers and he stopped, dropped his suitcase, turned and ran out of the airport screaming “I don’t want to die here”. Outside the airport more CCTV shows him jumping over a barbed wire fence and disappearing into the nearby woods never to be seen again.

He left his belongings including his wallet, passport and phone.

A truck driver claimed to have met him in April 2015 and that he gave Lars a lift, but this was never confirmed.

He was dubbed the Most Famous Missing Person on Youtube when the CCTV was uploaded and has been viewed millions of times. I have included some photos from the video but I suggest you watch it for yourself

Theory:

The most common theory is that the doctor misdiagnosed Lars after the fight and that he had some sort of brain injury. This injury made him paranoid and think people were after him. After seeing the construction workers, his brain went into hallucination mode and this caused him to disappear.

Another theory is that he was an undiagnosed schizophrenic and this was triggered again by the fights and perhaps the pills he was prescribed. However he and his family had no history of mental illness. This does not rule out this theory but it is less likely.
