Tonight, we went out to eat at Cracker Barrel. As we were almost done, we noticed an elderly woman sitting alone, drinking a milk and waiting for her food. A lot of thoughts went through my mind. She looked so lonely… Is she widowed? Where is her family? Why is she at a restaurant at almost 8 p.m.?
Also at our table were three big, strong, middle-aged men, who looked like hardworking, hungry guys. I asked Tom if we should buy her dinner or go sit with her… then one of our kids did or said something that distracted us for a moment. When we looked back, these big men were helping the elderly woman to their table.
We watched them talk and interact. The woman was smiling from ear to ear, her face lit up, and she was talking like she hadn’t spoken to anyone in a long time. I was really moved, and so was Tom.
As we left, we left them some money for their meal, and Tom thanked them for restoring our faith in humanity. I took a picture, but I know I will never forget this moment.
