Last Saturday, after I got back from a house fire in 4’s district (I was literally in the shower), Engine 6 got called to a car accident on Highway 58. The accident involved a pregnant mother and her three young kids in the back seat.
The mom was really upset because she was feeling pain in her stomach and back. The kids were all between 7 years old and 4 months old. The two older girls were okay, but the baby was crying a lot. So, I took the baby out of her car seat and checked her to make sure she was alright. As soon as I did, she laid her head on my shoulder.
After a little while, I decided my team had everything under control, so I took a moment to relax with my new little friend. She fell asleep in my arms right away. The mom was taken to the hospital, and Engine 6 stayed with the kids until they were handed over to family. Moments like this remind me why I do this job.
