How do fans and critics view Jack Nicholson’s decision to step back from acting, and what impact does it have on his legacy?

Jack Nicholson is 88 years old so the idea that he’s enjoying a long and comfortable retirement should come as a shock to no one.

(Nicholson last year at a Lakers’ game. Among his few public outings these days are basketball games, something he’s always enjoyed.)

Most of us can never even hope to live into our late 80s and certainly not with the kind of wealth Nicholson has stockpiled over his life. So here’s hoping he’s enjoying the rest and the products of all his work over the years.

The problem is, the paparazzi just don’t want to leave the man alone, and the writers in the gossip rags just can’t believe he’d want to spend his remaining years living in peace.

They continue to speculate as to why he retired and why he spends most of his time at home and out of the public eye.

But does anyone other than a few devotees of celebrity gossip really care?

At 88, quiet and the comforts of home are a pretty nice thing. And the idea that he’d go out and party like it was 1979 is all a bit absurd. Even the thought that he’d be compelled to keep acting at his age is a bit spurious.

He doesn’t need the money, after all. He’s worth nearly a half a billion dollars by most estimates.

So let him enjoy his final years without bothering him too much. He’s at least earned it.
