Against common misconception, quicksand won’t drown you, since it is more dense than your torso. The problem that arises with quicksand is that you can get pretty much stuck in it and can die of starvation, thirst or extreme temperatures.
The force required to get your foot out of quicksand at a rate of 1 cm per second equals the force of lifting a medium sized car. So if you’re really stuck deep in the middle of the quicksand, forget about moving your legs out of the sand by sheer force.
First of all, you need to get rid of any excess weight which will be a gigantic hindrance to escaping. Breath deeply, since your lungs being filled up to the maximum will allow you to float better.
If you find yourself in a vertical position, lean yourself backwards in a position in which you can float. This will allow your feet to get back to the surface, since your weight is more evenly distributed.
When you move your legs upwards while in floating position, allow the quicksand under your legs to fill up for a moment.
Slowly move centimeter by centimeter to the shore.
Try to reach out to something external like a tree branch and try to drag yourself out. Only do this when your feet are already at the surface again.
