Do you think Florida’s recent expansion of its Python hunting program will make a large dent in the invasive species problem?

Hey, anything they do will help I guess, but having folks go out and hunt them one-at-a-time is ridiculous. These animals reproduce at a rate of 50–100 young per nest and can sometimes nest 2 times a year. The most productive method of control tried so far is radio-tagging males and following them to the breeding females and their nests. That way, instead of killing one snake, you get 50–100 potential snakes out of the environment with one trip.

Here’s a 17-foot female with 87 eggs out of production.

More of the scientific methods and less of the macho-man vs. python would be a better approach.

These guys just spent three days hunting and got one python; not very productive.
