Do hyenas protect each other during a lion attack?

Mateo Elijah

To some degree, yes.

However, if one gets grabbed by a big male lion and they’re alone…hell no!

A lot of times once one hyena has been grabbed, one of two things happen:
1. Hyenas in sufficient numbers mob & overwhelm the cat. Protecting their comrad!
2. They become hugely intimidated, recognizing this could=death & back off.

Much of this depends on the numbers game. How many hyena are currently present on scene, AS WELL as how many lions. Neither species is ever alone. Hyenas make a notorious call when they see lions, it’s a long whoop…telling the clan to come for reinforcements.

Hyenas as a whole, though, do protect eachother. They live in clans of up to 100 and are very ‘loyal’ to one another. They will usually do whatever they can to help the other, within reason.

Much of their strategy is to use psychological warfare (hence the noises) & use numbers to overwhelm the bigger predators. This generally works & often leads to a truce of sorts between the two, in most situations. One wins the spoils & the other moves off. With only minimal injuries occurring to either group.

Above: hyenas can & do kill lions, & at least eat them.
