One of them is pro-athletes.
A divorce lawyer told me they have a 70–80% divorce rate and it isn’t what you think it is (cheating). He said the vast majority of those divorces happen within 1 year of the athlete retiring.
(This literally happened with Tom Brady too.)
The reason?
The athlete isn’t used to being home with their spouse and kids so much. In the off season as athletes, they were typically going on lavish vacations and playing catch-up for all the time they’d missed during the year.
But even then, spring training is usually right around the corner. When retired, they learn what us regular dudes have known all along: what it’s like being married and living with someone.
That’s when you find out how compatible you actually are.
Compound this with retired athletes often going into depression and lacking purpose, and that causes even more problems. You also can’t party like Tom did after winning the superbowl:
You have all of the time you need to yourself while training. In retirement, athletes are held more accountable to their families.
My sympathy will only go so far for multi-million dollar athletes getting divorced, but they do get some from me.
Marriage takes a lot of work—even if you are rich.
