My phone rang from a number I didn’t know

Mateo Elijah

My phone rang from a number I didn’t know. Since it was around the time my kids usually get home from school, I quickly answered, thinking it might be one of them. Sure enough, a small, shaky voice said, “Mama, I got on the wrong bus.”

This is his first year in middle school, and I can only imagine how much pressure kids feel today. My heart sank knowing how worried he must have been. It was only his second day riding the bus home since he usually has football practice. As he talked to the bus driver, I could hear the stress in his voice when he said, “I’m so sorry.”

But then I heard the kindest response from her: “Oh honey, you don’t have to apologize. My job is to get you home safely—and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.” My heart melted. She didn’t just do her job—she comforted him like a mom would.

Before I could even get to him, she had him call me again to ask if it was okay to stop for a drink. And then—cue the tears—she even bought him ice cream while they waited for me.

When I arrived, she walked him over and gently explained how worried he had been, even asking her if he had “messed everything up.” My poor boy. She wanted to make sure he didn’t have to tell me all over again and feel that stress.

I pray every day that God puts the right people in my children’s paths when I can’t be there. Today, He did just that. This amazing woman showed the love of Christ through her care and kindness for my son. I’ll make sure her supervisors hear about how she went above and beyond.

So if your day feels interrupted or inconvenient, remember—sometimes it’s not about you. It might be your chance to bless someone else.
